These are the rules for a new car bought from a dealer. Used-car and private-sale rules can differ. How we check this data.
Missouri charges 4.225% at the state level. Local taxes add more, based on where you live. That rate is higher than 13 states and lower than 37 states. County and city taxes may add to it, so check your local rate and enter the total in the calculator.
What to know in Missouri
Missouri dealers don't collect sales tax on the cars they sell. You pay it yourself at a Missouri license office when you title the car, and you have 30 days from the purchase date to do it. After that there's a $25 title penalty.
The 4.225% state rate is only part of the tax, because local taxes based on where you live are added. Trade-ins and rebates both reduce the taxable amount. Since the tax isn't part of the dealer's price, plan whether you'll pay it in cash or roll it into the loan.
Does Missouri tax your trade-in?
No. Missouri only taxes the difference between the new car's price and your trade-in. On a $35,000 car with a $10,000 trade-in, you'd pay $1,056.25 in state tax instead of $1,478.75, a saving of $422.50. That saving is worth counting when you compare a dealer's trade-in offer with selling the car yourself.
Example: a car loan in Missouri
A $35,000 car with $5,000 down, $1,500 in fees, and a 60-month loan at 6.5% APR ($1,478.75 state tax, rolled into the loan):
- Monthly payment: $645.27
- Amount financed: $32,979
- Total interest: $5,737
- Total cost of the car: $43,716

Rebates and fees
In Missouri, a rebate lowers the taxable price, and the calculator takes it off before figuring the tax. Title, registration and dealer documentation fees vary, so ask for an itemized out-the-door price and put the fee total in the calculator.
